My First Moon Halo
Sunday, 24 Apr 2005 | Astronomy
Toni noticed a moon halo Thursday night when she took Taffy outside. I went out to see it. The small point of light to the left of the moon is Venus according to her. She told me that she learned in Astronomy about moon halos. Her teacher referred to the phenomenon as crystallization. I had never seen this before, so I decided to set up my tripod to take a picture of it. Apparently tiny ice crystals in the upper atmosphere create this large halo around the moon.

Amazing. I have always tried to capture a lunar eclipse or some other interesting spectacle I see in the night sky. I'm horrible at photography, though, so the pictures don't really turn up that great.

Thanks. I had to do a lot of Photoshop manipulation to get it to look this good. It's hard to get the halo to show and not have the moon's light get too overexposed.

I am from Malaysia, Penang. I saw the halo tonight, at 8.45 pm. with the crescent moon in the middle and I was wondering what it was. Now, you have verified it. Thanks.
