Mo's Smokehouse BBQ
Saturday, 9 Jul 2005 | Food, Restaurants

On Monday, we checked out of the Apple Farm Inn and stopped in downtown San Luis Obispo for lunch before heading home. I found a place called Mo's Smokehouse BBQ. It sounded like a good place for barbecue lovers like Toni and myself.

We ordered a BBQ Sampler to share and started with Fried Green Tomatoes. We received a cute little pig wooden number for our table so the server could deliver our meal. Isn't he cute? The tomatoes were good, but not as good as the first time we tried this dish at Experience Music Project in Seattle, Washington. The BBQ Sampler had barbecue babyback ribs, pulled pork, chicken, beans, potato salad and a corn bread muffin. The barbecued meats were all pretty good. We liked the pulled pork the best. The corn muffin was excellent and I was tempted to order more, but Toni talked me out of it. We also really liked the beans and potato salad.

Overall, the food at Mo's was good, but it wasn't the best barbecue we've had. That's because we've had some excellent barbecue from San Antonio, Texas and various other places during our travels. The ribs were cooked nicely, but they didn't have quite enough of the smokiness that we love. Strangely, some of the best barbecue we've had was on a trip to Vancouver, Canada.

Thanks for the great compliment, Kat! :)
BTW, I don't mind if you keep saying how good my food photographs are. So just keep on keeping on!

Your food photographs are incredible! I just told Brent (my hubby) that you've inspired me to start photographing food (I've never thought of doing that before . . . I mainly take nature photographs). But since I LOVE food, why not take photographs of it?
We love great BBQ restaurants too! Do you recommend any in the local area? What are your favs?

Shari - I think you'll enjoy taking food pictures. I'll have to warn you though, it can take a little practice making the food look appetizing. My first food shots were too dark and didn't capture the appealing qualities. Now, I have gotten to where I can make some food look better in photos than it did in person. I find that having some window light helps when photographing food.
I don't know of any really good BBQ restaurants in the Murrieta area. We do like the Original Roadhouse Grill in Temecula, but it's not the real smokey BBQ you can get in Texas and the South. They do have very good ribs, steak and prime rib though. It's also fun that they have peanuts to eat while you wait and you can toss the shells on the floor.
