Baby Food in High School
Tuesday, 25 Oct 2005 | Daily, Food, Friends
Today, I was talking to my friend Cindy and she mentioned that Ashley, her 15 year-old daughter in high school likes to eat baby food. "You're kidding me, right?" I asked her. She reaffirmed that her daughter likes to take baby food in the jar to school to eat as a snack or meal. She said that she really likes the fruit flavored ones.
Then another female friend chimes in, "I used to eat baby food in high school too. It's good. It's just food." A third female friends tells me how the baby food pudding is very good. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I had no idea that teenage and adult women like to eat baby food. I could see tasting a little baby food while feeding your infant, but this seemed very strange to me.
Later, I called my friend Lori to ask if I was the only one who found this odd. She said that she likes the Gerber Vanilla Custard Pudding a lot. In fact, she used to buy it when her children were babies, pretending it was for the baby, when in fact it was for her. She said the baby didn't even like that flavor.
I know, baby food is just food that is pureed to make it easier to eat and digest, but I can't get over adults enjoying it as food. Every person that said they enjoyed baby food happened to be a woman. Is it a normal occurence that women eat baby food and I never knew it? Are there lots of men out there eating baby food too? Am I the only crazy person that thinks this is odd? I'd love to know your opinion.

Oh wow, I used to love eating baby food (the fruit ones) and sometimes I still crave it!! I have no idea why that is, but yeah I've never heard of a guy liking it. Interesting... now I have something to think about. :)

Kat - You eat it too? Oh my gosh! LOL

Man, I had totally forgot about this, but I went to high school in the early '80s and a lot of us girls ate baby food--easy to carry, could stay in a locker for weeks without going bad, and healthier than grabbing crap at the snack bar. Guys used to shake their heads then when we ate it. Ah, memories!

My favorite flavor was Hawaiian Delight. I also loved the baby teething biscuits/cookies. Yummy!

I'm a texture eater, so I couldn't swallow the moosh!

LaDonna - I can see your practical rationale for eating baby food. Hmmm.
Josie - I've never even heard of Hawaiian Delight baby food. I looked it up and it is called Hawaiian Delight Dessert and made by Gerber. What flavors are in it? And you must be talking about Arrowroot biscuits.
Kim - Wow! Finally a female that doesn't love baby food. My daughter is very much a texture eater too. ;)
I wonder if there are any men who love baby food. Either there aren't or they are not willing to admit it. LOL

uffff, no baby food for me, thanks... the closest thing to baby food i'd eat is the dutch beschuitjes met warme melk...

yasmina - I would be willing to try that Dutch dish. It looks like it would be good. :D

Hi, mike! ;-)
I have given some fruit-based baby food to my first son, and may be doing so in a couple of months later for my new-born second son...but to tell you the truth, I have never tasted them myself before! LOL!
I'm a woman, a mother, and don't worry, I do feel odd about eating baby food. ;-)

sleepydays - It's good to know there's one more on my side. ;D

Arrowroot cookies are yummy no matter how old you are! A simple, sweet, comforting taste (and a serving of 4 cookies has 4 weight watchers Points)Great with tea, esp the flavored teas on the market
And I do use baby food bananas in a recipe I made up called Jiffy Bananascotch Mousse. You could just mash fresh bananas by hand, I suppose, but it will be more LUMPY. The baby food bananas are ideal.
Also, try mixing baby food fruits with plain yogurt and sweeten to taste with Splenda!
RECIPE -- JIFFY BANANASCOTCH MOUSSE
1 tub whipped cream substitute, such as French Vanilla Cool Whip
1 envelope Jello Instant Pudding Mix, Butterscotch (or try Vanilla)
2 jars baby food bananas
Combine ingredients in whipped cream substitute container, then gently fold with spoon until blended. Yummmm! A dessert fit for King Juan Carlos! I always make this dessert for special occasions and get rave reviews

It was the trend back in the 80s to enjoy baby food fruit as snacks. It's just fruit, individually packaged and portion controlled (this means calorie management too) and keeps well. Think of it as a different kind of fruit snack.

Another thing. I tried the Gerber Graduates Apple Mini-Fruits after reading that many adults enjoyed snacking on them, especially folks who do weight management. All they are is apple pieces. Freeze dried crunchy apple pieces. They taste for all the world like the Weight Watchers Apple Snacks I enjoyed as a young'un in the 70s and 80s, also freeze-dried apple pieces.
The Mini Fruits were scrumptious -- melting in the mouth with a sweet, tart wallop of major fruitiness. DELECTABLE! And only 100 calories for a bag, and 2 for $5 (bought the apple and the strawberry-banana, which I have yet to try). They may be marketed for 2-year-olds, but this big kid thinks they taste AWESOME!

Sparkina - The apple snacks do sound good, I must admit, but the thought of so many adults eating baby food is still odd to me. ;)

I love jars of banana baby food! My niece always ate baby food when she was high school age. (fruit dessert?)

Found these two recipes on the net. No lie, no joke.

2 jars baby food (plums, apricots, etc.)
PREPARATION:
Stir sugar, flour and spices together in a large mixing bowl. Add remaining ingredients, mixing well. Bake in greased and floured tube pan at 325° for 1 hour, or until done.

Add dry ingredients and vanilla.
Fold in carrots.
Bake at 350° in a greased and floured 9 x 13 pan for 40 to 45 minutes.

As you can see, it is kind of hard for me to see grown women snacking on baby food fruit out of the jar straight up, I can see using it as an ingredient in something
disneymike said at 9:45 PM on Thursday, May 10, 2007
Sparkina - Wow! That's amazing. I never knew there were baby food recipes. But, I must say that using baby food as an ingredient doesn't sound as strange to me as eating it straight as an adult. :)

sorry about the repeat posts. My puter acted bizarro

I told some people about my idea of buying plain yogurt and mixing it with baby food fruit and sweetening it with Splenda to make a great-tasting reduced-calorie fruit yogurt, and they were impressed with the calories I save. A container of La Yogurt Sabor Latino mango yogurt is 170 cals. I add a half a jar of Beech-Nut strained mangos and some Splenda to a container of Dannon Nonfat plain yogurt, and that's just as yummy, for only 130 cals.

Hi,
I happened to visit this blog because I found it odd that I like baby food. A brand called Cerlac in particular. I hate to admit it. But I'm one of those few guys that enjoy baby food. I guess it's for practical reasons as well.
disneymike said at 9:31 PM on Saturday, February 23, 2008
J - Very interesting. Hmm. I've never heard of Cerlac. I'll have to do some research on that. ;)
