Woodhouse Fire

Friday, 7 Oct 2005 | Daily

On Wednesday, I was driving to the Angels game and noticed a huge plume of black smoke in the distance before me. As I approached, I could see that it was located between the 60 and 10 freeways. As I drove through the Badlands to Moreno Valley, the fire was quite close to the road. There were firefighters lined up, marching toward the fire. At one point, a plane swooped within several hundred yards of me, dousing the hillside with reddish-orange flame retardant. There was a stretch of the road where I could actually feel the warmth from the flames. If I had passed through a half hour later, I'm sure the road would have been closed.

The Woodhouse fire has scorched over 6,000 acres since it started on Wednesday and is currently 70% contained.
