Under the Golden Gate Bridge
Thursday, 9 Feb 2006 | Family
When I was a child, my mother used to tell me that she found me under the Golden Gate Bridge. Actually, I'm not sure if it was under or on the Golden Gate Bridge, but I'm certain about the Golden Gate Bridge part. Sadly, my mom is not around anymore, so I can't ask her to verify which is correct. Perhaps my dad can shed some light on the subject if he remembers the topic at all.
My mother was Korean. I am half Korean and half Caucasian. I remember talking to a Korean friend of mine who mentioned that her mom told her she was found somewhere as a baby too. Now I'm wondering if this is a common thing Korean moms tell their children. Or is it an Asian thing? I don't think it's common with American moms, at least I haven't heard of it. I wonder if there are lots of Korean folks out there who were told similar stories by their mothers.
The other day, I came across a post in a blog I frequent, Latitude13, where the writer shares a story that's somewhat similar. I'm not sure about Josie's ethnicity, but her father told her a similar story about being found in Korea. I thought that was amusing considering my mom's story.
I guess things like this are one of the joys of being raised in an ethnic family. LOL

Isn't it odd how many of us have this in common? Our parents must have all attended the same crappy parenting seminar back in the day. LOL
I am half Chamorro (Guam native) and almost-half Filipino. I say almost-half because I have a maternal great-grandfather who was Irish.

Josie - Yes, it is interesting how many of us have this type of story in common. I'm curious what other stories people have like this. I'd love to hear about them.
Oh, and thanks for sharing your ethnic background. ;)

i think it's an asian thing... my mom would tell me she found me in the dumpster, or my personal favorite- i came busting out of a rock.

melissa - I guess it is an Asian thing as I suspected. LOL
I've never heard of busting out of a rock. That is too funny! ;D

Hi Mike,
It's a Korean thing. Bridge in Korean is Dah Rhi and Leg in Korean is same character as Dah Rhi and read or written in exactly same. This whole thing is sort of joke. Your uncle or aunt would make fun of you when you were baby or kid by saying that you were found under the BRIDGE(Dah Rhi) or LEG(Dah Rhi), LOL.

Charles Kim - Thank you for the detailed and informative comment. That kind of makes sense to me now. It truly is a funny Korean thing!
