Don't Use Expectorants at Bedtime
Friday, 9 Feb 2007 | Daily
I have been sick with a bad cold for the past two weeks now. I'm feeling much better, but I'm still not 100%. I had major congestion in my chest and sinuses and a miserably sore throat. I've finished my round of antibiotics and almost feel human again despite my lingering, nagging cough that acts up especially at night.
I bought some Mucinex at my doctor's suggestion to help break up and clear the mucus in my chest. It worked very well, but I found out that you shouldn't take it before bedtime unless you want to cough and hack yourself awake all night long. A friend at work told me his doctor said to take an expectorant only during the day when you're active, but not at night if you want to sleep. I can tell you from experience this is good advice. I haven't enjoyed this cold, but at least I learned a lesson about expectorants that I will remember for the future.
