Ballet Folklorico 2007

A few weeks ago I photographed the Concurso de Ballet Folklorico at UCR for the third consecutive year. My sister-in-law used to work for UCR and has helped coordinate the event, a charity to raise scholarship funds for Hispanic students. She has since moved on to work at RCC, but still helps with the event. I volunteer my time and effort because I like to give back and it's truly fun and interesting to see the talent of these young people. They put on a great competition each year.

This event helps me hone my photographic skills. It's a challenge to take the outdoor portraits in the limited time available and the indoor photos sans flash are challenging to capture. It's worth it to see the costumes, makeup and jewelry and the beautiful dancing. The kids are always happy to pose for me. They love to perform and to have their portraits taken.

It's also quite a workout toting my Nikon D2x with 70-200mm f/2.8G VR and SB-800 flash for several hours. I do get a little break during the indoor competition since I mount my camera on a monopod for stability. All in all, it's worthwhile when I see how pleased the dancers and dancers' parents are with the pictures.

I'm glad you volunteer, because these are some of your photos that I've enjoyed most on your Flickr stream.
